Graduate Data Scientist ML Engineer

Deep Tech Digital Health Startup

 

The problem we're solving

450 million people worldwide have COPD. Most are diagnosed only after they've lost half their lung function, when prevention is off the table and treatment becomes management.

lungDx is our answer. A smartphone-based diagnostic that listens to a patient breathing and tells their clinician what it's hearing, in seconds, using only the phone in their pocket. It runs in clinics across the UK, US and Japan, and in patients' hands, right now.

We're hiring a graduate engineer to help us build the intelligence behind it.

Why this role

You'll be one of a small team of engineers. We'll pair you with a senior engineer and a senior data scientist from day one, and you'll be given your own projects to lead within weeks. The code you write goes in front of real patients in real clinics, with regulators paying attention to it. There is no more direct way to see the impact of your work.

Where the role goes: strong contributors typically move into leading their own workstream within twelve to eighteen months, owning a clinical problem area or a piece of the platform. Publication opportunities on our peer-reviewed research are available for those who want them. Equity vests as the company grows.

What you'll work on

The role has a strong bias toward machine learning and signal processing on real physiological data. Depending on where your strengths sit, you'll specialise in one or two of these areas over your first year:

  • Machine learning experiments in PyTorch, cardio-respiratory time-series data

  • Signal processing pipelines that turn messy sensor data into clinical signal

  • Python data analysis and visualisation, across patient and pilot study datasets

  • Sensor and device validation, getting clean data out of real hardware

  • Internal tools, dashboards and small apps used by the rest of the team

  • Documentation written well enough that a regulator reading it three years later can follow what you did

What you need to bring

A degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, data science or a related STEM field. We look at what you've built, not where you built it.

Python competence good enough to pick up a problem and prototype your way through it. Coursework, side projects, hackathons, internships and GitHub commits all count.

A demonstrable interest in machine learning or signal processing. Something you've built, broken, and had another go at.

Fluency with modern AI coding tools such as Cursor, Copilot, Claude or ChatGPT, and the judgement to use them well. We use them daily. That means recognising good output from bad, spotting when a model has guessed, and knowing when to reach for first principles instead of another prompt. We'd rather you were honest about what you use than pretend you don't.

A learning posture. This role assumes you'll pick up new domains quickly: physiological signals, medical device standards, cloud infrastructure, regulatory documentation. The people who thrive here are the ones who go home and read up on something they didn't understand that morning, and who see an unfamiliar area as an invitation rather than a wall.

The ability to explain your thinking clearly to people who aren't technical, including clinicians and commercial colleagues.

And the thing we look for that's hardest to write down: the graduate who has a crack at the problem, breaks it, and comes back the next day to figure out why. If you've ever stayed up later than you should have because a problem was bugging you, you know what we mean.

Nice to have (not required)

  • PyTorch or another ML framework, beyond notebook exercises

  • Signal processing or time-series experience

  • NumPy, pandas, matplotlib, OpenCV

  • Embedded systems, sensors or mobile development

  • Google Cloud, Firebase, SQL or NoSQL databases

Honest context about how we work

We're a small, dynamic Cambridge team. The pace is fast. Priorities move as clinical data arrives and as regulators respond. You'll be given responsibility early, and you'll be expected to take it. If you want a large graduate scheme with structured rotations and predictable months, this isn't that. If you want to learn quickly and see the impact of your work on real patients, it is.

The role is office-based in central Cambridge, five days a week. Being in the room with clinicians, engineers and the commercial team is how we work, and it's how you'll learn fastest.

What we offer

A starting salary between £32,000 and £38,000, set on offer against your experience. EMI share options, which means you own a real stake in the company that vests over time. Mentorship that isn't just on paper, because the team is still small enough that no one is anonymous.

And the part that isn't easy to put on a benefits page: ownership of work that ends up in front of patients. Not many graduate roles offer that.
